How Do I Heal My Third Eye Chakra?

The third eye chakra is the center of your intuition and imagination. This is what we refer to as our “mind’s eye”, and is connected to all forms of sight and vision. Its color is indigo, which is a dark blue-violet.

The Sanskrit name of the third eye chakra is Ajna and it is the sixth of the seven traditional chakras. It is sometimes called the brow chakra.

Where is the third eye chakra located?

The third eye chakra is located in the front part of your brain. When placing stones for the third eye chakra, place them in the center of your forehead.

What does the third eye chakra represent?

This is the home of everything related to seeing with what is sometimes called your “sixth sense” or ESP (extra-sensory perception). This includes intuition, clairvoyance, connecting to Spirit guides, and seeing the future (precognition).

The third eye chakra is also the home of mindfulness, clarity, awareness, dreams, imagination, and the mind. It helps us make intuitive leaps and perceive people’s intentions through “theory of mind” (a mental map of another person’s motivations and thought processes).

A balanced third eye chakra gives us the ability to see ourselves and others clearly, as well as be open to higher guidance and inspiration. Our thoughts are clear, we can self-reflect, and we have access to all the faculties of our mind.

Our sense of self as an independent entity making self-aware decisions lives here. Discernment, wisdom, ethics, understanding, our conscience, and a sense of justice are all part of the third eye chakra.

We sense the subtle energy of crystals through the third eye as well, so it’s essential to being successful at crystal healing.

What are symptoms of a blocked or weak third eye chakra?

Lack of Direction

A weak third eye chakra can show up as a lack of focus and an inability to make good decisions.

Underlying this can be a sense of being so caught up in material existence that you don’t take time to step back and look at your life from a larger perspective. You just want to keep your head down and get through–but doing this cuts you off from support and resources that could help you.

Lack of Imagination

A blocked third eye chakra can leave you unable to access your creative imagination and unable to “think outside the box”.

There can even be a rejection of the spiritual completely in order to focus just on “the real world”. Out of fear or inability to feel or access spiritual knowing, reports of spiritual experiences seem fake. Everything in life is greeted with skepticism. Sometimes underneath this is a wound that produced a lack of trust in the Universe.

Lost in a Fantasy Life

Some people have the opposite problem: too much imagination. An overactive third eye chakra can lead to problems concentrating on things that matter or need to get done. There can be an escape into a fantasy life that is preferable to reality. Instead of creating a vision for your life and then taking action to create it, there is endless daydreaming that never amounts to anything real.

Nightmares & Mental Disturbance

When imbalanced, the third eye chakra can cause nightmares and obsessive thinking. It can even be a source of psychic visions that you can’t stop or that intrude on your life. Ultimately it can be a source of delusions.

Problems with the third eye chakra can also manifest as memory issues and difficulty concentrating.

Physically, an imbalanced third eye chakra can show up as headaches, difficulty sleeping, or eye strain.

What does a healthy third eye chakra feel like?

Seeing Things Accurately

A healthy third eye chakra helps us see life as it is, without projections or wishful thinking. We have full access to our perceptive abilities and are able to discern what is going on around us from a place of objectivity. We are aware of the difference between how we would like things to be and how they actually are.

Knowing Where You Want to Go

Balancing your third eye chakra helps you clarify your vision of how you want your life to be, and stay clearly on that path. It also allows you to let go of what is not serving you.

Imagination & Intuition

Psychics and intuitives use these faculties as part of their work, but in reality we all have some psychic ability. Working to heal the third eye chakra can help us use and improve our natural abilities.

A strong third eye chakra also supports creating art and accessing your inspiration for creative work. It supports imagination and the world building that goes into writing books and creating games.

Besides crystals, how can I support the third eye chakra?

First, know that all the upper chakras depend on the lower ones. So, sometimes it’s actually the case that you need to work on the lower ones first. For example, if your third eye is opening and you are ungrounded in your root chakra, it can cause it to go into an overactive state. Ideally, each chakra works together with the other ones. This is why I recommend a chakra body layout (where you lay crystals on each chakra).

With that in mind, here are some ways you can support your third eye chakra specifically:

  • meditate and practice mindfulness
  • practice active imagination, where you vividly imagine something you want to occur
  • examine the deeper meanings of events in your life
  • practice seeing events through the frame of an observer or witness
  • “zoom out” – see things from a larger perspective
  • examine self-limiting beliefs
  • any practice that encourages letting go of ego and accessing compassion
  • learn to read the Tarot or another divination method
  • decorate and wear deep indigo blue as color therapy

To work at maximum potential, the brain needs a balance between logic and creativity. If you notice an imbalance in yourself toward either analytical reason (“left-brain”) or intuition/integration (“right-brain”), work on experiencing and expressing the opposite quality.
