Larimar Mineral & Gemstone Information
Larimar is a striking sky blue stone found only on the Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic. It is a variety of pectolite, a silicate mineral. It was originally discovered by a priest in 1916 but only developed as a gemstone after being rediscovered in 1974 by Miguel Méndez who found a specimen on the beach. He named it after his daughter (Larissa) and the Spanish word for the sea (mar). The gem was traced back to an area in the mountains, which was subsequently mined for more stones.
Larimar can fade if exposed to too much light or heat, so it’s best to wear it under your shirt or only indoors or for short periods of time.
